Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal venue for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian and was added to her repertoire in 1996.
