Awkwafina began as an American musician and rapper performing sly tunes that dealt with topics like racial or sexuality with a humorous twist. In the years before she stepped to Hollywood her career, she had the opportunity to perform a variety of tracks. Nora Lum was born to Chinese-Korean immigrants from Forest Hills Queens. Her first encounter with music was from the trumpet. After classical and Jazz training her interest in hip-hop grew as a teen. While in college, she focused on her studies. She took up a degree in women's studies as well as journalism. While she was for a brief amount of time, in Beijing, Mandarin language classes were offered as well. The focus changed to music once she finished her studies. Her 2012 track My Vag a response to Mickey Avalon's My Dick found viral success through the Internet before settling on her debut album Yellow Ranger in 2014.
